Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your website appears in Google Search: which searches lead to your pages, how often your pages appear and get clicked, which pages Google has indexed and any problems that might prevent pages from showing. For design businesses, it is the most direct window into how Google sees your site. Setting it up takes a few minutes, and a short monthly check can reveal both problems and opportunities.

Here is how to get started and what to look at.

Setting up

Sign in with a Google account, add your website as a property and verify ownership. Google offers several verification methods, such as adding a record to your domain settings or uploading a file. A domain property covers all versions of your site and is usually the best choice. If someone built your site, they may be able to help verify it.

Submit a sitemap

A sitemap lists your site's pages for Google. Most platforms generate one automatically. Submit its address in Search Console so Google can discover your pages efficiently.

The performance report

The performance report shows:

  • Queries: the searches that led to your pages appearing.
  • Impressions: how often your pages appeared in results.
  • Clicks: how often people clicked.
  • Average position: roughly where your pages appeared.
  • Pages: which pages appeared and were clicked.

Our guide to finding your keywords in Search Console explains how to use this report to discover what clients search for.

The indexing report

The page indexing report shows which pages Google has indexed and which it has not, with reasons. Some unindexed pages are normal, such as redirects or intentionally excluded pages. Others signal problems. Our guide to fixing indexing problems explains common statuses.

The URL Inspection tool

URL Inspection shows how Google sees a specific page: whether it is indexed, when it was last crawled and any issues. You can request indexing for new or updated pages.

Experience and enhancements

Search Console includes reports on page experience and, where relevant, structured data enhancements. These highlight issues such as mobile usability problems or errors in structured data.

Common errors

Search Console flags errors such as pages not found, server errors and redirect problems. Our article on common Search Console errors and fixes explains what they mean.

What the numbers mean for a design business

Impressions show visibility; clicks show interest. A page with many impressions but few clicks may need a clearer title or description. Rising impressions for searches like "interior designer in [town]" show growing local visibility. Our article on why clients search by project type explains which searches matter most.

A monthly habit

  • Check total clicks and impressions compared with last month.
  • Review top queries and pages.
  • Look for new indexing issues.
  • Note any errors and fix them.
  • Request indexing for important new pages.

Search Console shows Google Search performance, including some appearances in AI-related features, but it does not show everything about how AI tools describe your business. Combine it with checking AI answers directly. Our article on whether AI content ranks in Google explains how content quality affects performance.

Design-build and multi-service firms

Firms offering several services can use Search Console to see which services attract searches. Our article on how design-build firms can win Google and AI search explains how to structure services.

Understanding dates and delays

Search Console data is not instant. Performance data usually appears with a short delay, and indexing changes can take days or weeks to show. When you make changes, give them time before judging results, and compare similar periods, such as one month with the previous month or the same month last year.

Search Console's links report shows which external sites link to yours and which of your pages receive the most internal links. For design businesses, links from publications, associations and collaborators are valuable. The report helps you confirm that press features link to you and that important pages are well linked internally.

Mobile and page experience

Most design business visitors use phones. Search Console's experience reports flag pages with mobile usability or performance problems. Fixing slow, hard-to-use pages helps visitors and supports search visibility.

Common beginner mistakes

Beginners often panic about every unindexed page, ignore performance data entirely or check daily and overreact to small fluctuations. A calm monthly review focused on trends, errors and opportunities is far more useful. If something looks seriously wrong, such as a sudden drop in indexed pages, investigate promptly or ask for help.

Using Search Console with your Google profile

Search Console shows website performance, while your Google Business Profile shows how people interact with your listing. Review both together. If profile views rise but website clicks from search fall, for example, you may need to strengthen your website's pages.

When to ask for help

If reports show sudden drops, widespread errors or security warnings, ask a professional to investigate promptly. Quick action limits the impact.

Privacy and access

Add team members or partners as users with appropriate permissions, rather than sharing login details. Remove access when people leave.
