Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business in Google Search and Maps, with your name, services, photos, reviews, hours and contact details. When a homeowner searches for a contractor, Google decides which profiles to show based on three broad factors: relevance to the search, distance from the searcher or the place named and prominence, which reflects reviews, links and how well known the business is. You control much of what affects relevance and prominence through your profile, website and reputation.
Here is how it works for contractors and what you can do to strengthen your profile.
What a Business Profile includes
Your profile can include your business name, categories, services, service areas or address, hours, phone number, website, description, photos, posts, reviews and attributes. Homeowners see much of this at a glance when they search for your business or services nearby.
Relevance
Relevance is how well your profile matches what someone searched. Google looks at your categories, services, description and other information, as well as your website. A profile with accurate categories and a complete services list is more likely to appear for matching searches.
What you control: choose the most accurate primary category, add relevant secondary categories and list every core service with a description.
Distance
Distance is how far your business is from the searcher or the location in the search. You cannot change where you are based, but setting accurate service areas tells Google where you work. Contractors often appear more readily close to their base and need stronger relevance and prominence to appear farther away.
Prominence
Prominence reflects how well known and trusted your business is. Google considers reviews, the number and quality of links and mentions across the web and other signals. A steady flow of positive reviews, credible local links and an active profile contribute.
What you control: ask every satisfied client for a review, respond to reviews, earn local mentions and keep your profile active with photos and posts.
Service-area businesses
Many contractors work from home or a yard and visit clients. Google allows service-area businesses to hide their address and show the areas they serve. Set service areas to the towns and regions you genuinely cover.
Verification
Google verifies that a business is real before its profile appears fully. Verification methods vary and may include video, phone, email or mail. Keep information consistent with what you submit during verification.
Reviews
Reviews appear prominently and influence both visibility and decisions. Respond to every review, positive or critical. Our article on getting more Google reviews as a contractor explains how to build them.
Photos
Photos show your work and signal an active business. Add real project photos regularly. Our guide to Google Business Profile photos that represent your work covers selection and preparation.
Description
A clear description of what you do and where helps homeowners and adds context. Our guide to writing a Google Business Profile description offers examples.
Posts
Posts let you share updates, completed projects or offers. They keep the profile fresh and give homeowners another reason to choose you.
Your website and your profile
Google connects your profile with your website. Consistent business details and a website with clear service and area pages strengthen relevance and prominence.

Guidelines to follow
Google has guidelines for names, addresses, categories and reviews. Use your real business name without extra keywords, list only real locations and never offer incentives for reviews. Breaking guidelines can lead to suspension.
Common misunderstandings
Some contractors believe that paying for ads improves their organic profile ranking. It does not; ads and organic results are separate. Others think adding more categories always helps, but irrelevant categories can confuse Google. Some believe reviews only matter in total, when recent reviews and thoughtful responses matter too. Understanding these points helps you spend effort where it counts.
How long changes take
Some updates, such as hours and phone numbers, appear quickly. Changes in visibility from new reviews, photos or website improvements usually build over weeks and months. Keep making steady improvements and review your performance information monthly rather than expecting overnight results.
The profile and AI tools
AI assistants and Google's AI Overviews increasingly summarize local businesses for homeowners. They often draw on the same information your profile contains, along with your website and reviews. Accurate, complete profiles help these tools describe your business correctly.
A monthly routine
- Add new photos.
- Ask for reviews and respond to new ones.
