llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file, placed at the root of a website, that gives large language models a concise summary of the site and links to its most important pages. The idea, proposed in 2024, is to help AI tools find and understand key content more easily. It is not an official standard, and how much AI tools actually use it today is limited and uncertain. For most design studios, clear website content, consistent business details, reviews and credible mentions matter far more. Adding an llms.txt file is low effort and harmless, but it is not a shortcut to AI visibility.
Here is what it is, how it works and how to think about it.
What llms.txt contains
An llms.txt file is written in a simple format, often Markdown. It typically includes:
- The name of the business or site.
- A short summary of what it does.
- Links to key pages, such as services, projects, about and contact, with brief descriptions.
- Optional sections pointing to more detailed resources.
The goal is to give AI tools a clean, curated overview without having to parse complex web pages.
Where it goes
The file is usually placed at the root of the domain, for example at yourstudio.com/llms.txt, similar to how robots.txt and sitemap files are placed.
How it differs from robots.txt and sitemaps
Robots.txt tells crawlers which parts of a site they may access. A sitemap lists pages for search engines to discover. llms.txt is intended as a human-readable and machine-readable summary for language models. It does not control access, and it does not replace sitemaps.
Do AI tools use it?
This is the key question. llms.txt is a community proposal, and adoption by major AI companies is limited and not clearly documented. Some tools and developer platforms reference it, but there is no reliable evidence that it significantly affects how mainstream AI assistants describe or recommend businesses. Treat it as an experiment rather than a proven technique.
What matters more
AI tools rely mainly on the content of your website, your business profiles, reviews, directories and credible mentions. For a design studio, the priorities are:
- Clear service and project pages.
- Consistent business details everywhere.
- A complete Google Business Profile.
- Steady reviews.
- Press and professional memberships presented clearly.
- Structured data where appropriate.

Should your studio add one?
If your website is already clear and well structured, adding an llms.txt file is a small, low-risk step. It can be a useful exercise in itself, because writing a concise summary of your studio and choosing your most important pages clarifies your positioning. If your website still lacks clear service pages, project stories or consistent details, focus there first.
How to write one
A simple llms.txt for a design studio might include a one-paragraph summary of the studio, then a short list of key pages: services, featured projects, about, press and contact, each with a one-line description. Keep it accurate and update it when your site changes.
An example outline
A short llms.txt for an interior design studio might begin with the studio name and a single sentence: a full-service interior design studio in a named city, working on whole-home renovations and new construction. It might then list links to the services page, three featured project pages, the about page with credentials, the press page and the contact page, each with a one-line description. That is all most studios need.
Keeping it accurate
If you add an llms.txt file, keep it in step with your website. Outdated links or descriptions could mislead any tool that reads it. Add a reminder to review it whenever you update services or add major projects.
Watching how the proposal develops
The landscape of AI search changes quickly. If major AI companies formally adopt llms.txt or a similar standard, its importance could grow. Until then, it is sensible to treat it as a small, optional addition and to focus effort on the content and credibility that AI tools already use.
A useful side effect
Writing an llms.txt summary forces a clear, short description of your studio and its key pages. That clarity often improves your home page and about page too.
Keep expectations honest
Be cautious of anyone selling llms.txt as a sure route into AI answers. It may become more important if AI companies adopt it more widely, but today it is a minor factor at most.
The bigger plan
Our 90-day visibility foundation and Google and AI visibility audit offer a fuller approach to AI visibility. Even administrative tools, such as a client portal, matter less for visibility than the public content clients and AI tools can read.
